Please note, this portion of the handbook is taken from AFW's volunteer orientation and should only be used for reference. If you are trying to complete orientation to become a Command Pilot or Earth Angel, please visit https://training.angelflightwest.org/.
NOTE: If you have not yet taken AOPA’s online course: “Public Benefit Flying: Balancing Safety and Compassion,” you should do so before continuing. You will be asked to upload your certificate from that course in a later module. This video reiterates and reinforces the number one priority of our organization, SAFETY!
There are many reasons that the airlines and professional business pilots have better accident records than general aviation pilots. Some of their success has to do with the aircraft they fly and the ground support and resources that they have access to. However, much of their success has to do with their professional attitudes, planning, and ongoing training. This video reviews how professionalism relates to charitable aviation.
Using a FRAT
We recommend that you use a flight risk assessment tool (FRAT) before each flight. We provide a FRAT in the mobile app, or you may have one you use already. The FRAT is a great way to demonstrate the professionalism described in this topic.
The FRAT in the mobile app is specific to each flight. Find the FRAT for your flight under My Flights and select today’s flight. Provide numerical ratings in each of the categories and tap Save. The system will score your risk factors for this flight. Use this information to help you make your go-no go decision.
